Ethics & Fashion Photography

1. List the changes that were made to the model's face with Photoshop in the computer.  Her neck was lengthened, her eyes were moved down, her eyes were enlarged, her hair got moved around, her jaw was made smaller, her shoulders were made narrower.

2. List the changes that were made to the model's body with Photoshop in the computer.  The wrinkles got edited out of her face, her neck was lengthened, her skin was lightened, her stomach was made smaller, her legs were lengthened, her nose was made smaller, her eyes were made bigger, her arms were lengthened, her butt was made smaller, her calves were made narrower, there was a gap made between her lips, her pupils were made smaller, her arms were lengthened.

3. List the changes that were made to the model with Photoshop in the computer. Her hips were enlarged,  her stomach was made larger, her skin was discolored/patchy, her arms were made bigger, her legs were larger, her nose was larger, her face was more square, they added cheese coloring, added pepperoni,  edited out her face, filled in holes that showed the background, the woman was turned into a pizza.

4. Is it ethically acceptable to change a person's appearance like these in a photo? Why or why not? It is not acceptable because it is misleading and perpetuates society's toxic body standards. They are actually not real people, and can lead to people hurting themselves to look like imaginary people. The photoshopped person was actually not proportional, specifically with the neck, face and arms/legs.

5. Are there circumstances in which it would be more ethically wrong to do this type of manipulation? I think that it would be more ethically wrong if the person was whitewashed, or a heavy person was made so skinny you wouldn't recognize them. I think that if a person was intended to be viewed by younger audiences and was photoshopped to have an unrealistic body, that would be not okay either. Pushing toxic body images on young children never ends in a good way.

6. What types of changes are OK, and what aren't? I think that people shouldn't be photoshopped to different things, it alters the person's natural state of being. I think that superficial things would be okay (wrinkles, acne), but a lot of the edits that were made caused the person to be not proportional and unnatural.

7. Explain what you think the differences are between fashion photography and photojournalism. Most fashion photography is trying to sell a product. Whether that's the actual clothes, makeup or something else. The main part of fashion photography is to be the standard of beauty society holds over women. Photojournalism is used to document events and people.

8. What relationship does each type of photography have to reality, and how does this affect the ethical practice of each? Photojournalism shows what is actually realistic and is a process that documents people and how they live. It does not alter reality, it shows what is realistic. This is ethical because it shows what is real. Fashion photography alters reality, making women not proportional. This is unethical because it is unrealistic.

9. Why do you think I am showing you these three videos? I think that you are showing these videos to us to show us what is and isn't fake about the photography world. Also, to show us that editing people past an extent is misleading and disgusting, this isn't a process that you see everyday.

10. Why are none of these videos about guys??? None of these videos are about guys because society has a stronger body standards towards women. That has been built up over thousands of years, and is still being perpetuated.

American Soldier

A. What is the most powerful image from the pictures printed in the Denver Post over the three weeks they published images from the year of coverage? Why? This is a powerful picture because this is Ian with his girlfriend Kayla, but he looks very disconnected. The fact that they were looking at engagement rings for Kayla helps to make the picture more powerful because thats something people are usually excited and animated to do.

B. How do the images work together to tell a story? The images help to eliminate unnecessary information. It helps to bring to the front the more important points and struggles, without making the reader have to go read the entire text.

C. How do the captions enhance the photographs? The captions help to describe what is happening in the photos. Due to the information that is required to be in the caption, the reader knows the importance of the picture. They help to convey to the reader what is happening and why the picture is relevant to the text.

D. Summarize the story of Ian Fisher, based just on the captions.  When Ian had turned 17, he wanted to join the Army. He spoke with recruiting officers, and joined the delayed-entry program. Before he leaves, his parents and friends each threw him a party to celebrate him. He goes through basic training, and completes the training in September of 2007. He gets stationed near his home and he buys an engagement ring with his girlfriend Kayla. He falls into taking multiple types of pain medication, causing his dad to wonder if he has an addiction, he broke up with Kayla. Ian gets baptized before being deployed to Iraq, and he is dropped in rank due to being late to the base from the weekend off. He admitted that he had a drug problem. In September of 2008, Ian is deployed for Iraq. He gains back his rank while he is in Iraq and experiences what it is like to truly be in the army, as well as being deployed. When he returns from his deployment, he marries his girlfriend Devin.

E. For the photos in which Ian is the main subject of the photos, in what tense are the verbs usually written? They are written in present tense.

F. Break down the captions:

1. How many sentences are they on average? 3 to 4, depending on the picture.
2. Read the first sentence of a couple of them, what information do they provide? What is happening during when the photo was taken.
3. Read the second sentences of a couple of them, what information do they provide? Information that isn't able to be found out from the picture, but is relevant to the picture.
4. If there is a third sentence, what information does it provide? Information that adds to what happened after the picture was taken, information about him, the process or where he is, not able to be found out from the photo.
5. Do any captions include a quote? Yes, there is one when he is getting a tattoo with his friends and when he first gets home from being deployed, when it's cold.
6. Are there any that have four sentences? No

G. Why do you think it is possible to tell a complete story with just photos and captions? I think that between the pictures and the captions, the reader can understand the importance of the article. They are the main points, and are the most important ones, which is why they have been expanded.

H. If you can create a story with just photos and captions, why bother writing a story at all? The story helps to add details that are left out of captions. The captions are too vague to convey all the information that is 100% necessary.

Mural Project Review

1. Think of at least three ideas you have about what your team could take photos of, that are in the same theme? Juxtaposition, nature, different types of technology, stages of decay.

2. You will need to shoot in Manual. What are three things you will have to think about when you are out shooting? The position of the camera, the lighting of the area and the way that the picture is going to turn out.

3. Although we have always done this assignment as a paper/printed product. I am interested in being able to show off these images/creations/murals online. What are some ideas you have on how to get these pieces onto the internet? List three ideas and how you would suggest to your team this second product gets created. We could make a slideshow of the pictures and post the link. We could also post them on Instagram or Pinterest. Make a website and post the pictures on the website.

Top 100 Photos- The Burning Monk

1. Why did you pick this image? What caught your eye? I picked this image because there is a strong presence of resilience by the man in the photograph. This caught my eye because of the flames and because there was a man sitting on the ground, peacefully, while he was on fire.

2. Summarize what you read. How about 2-3 sentences explaining the photo. Malcolm Browne had been told that there was going to be something worth seeing to protest the treatment of the Buddhists by the Vietnam regime. This image went viral and helped to question the United States' association with the regime. In turn, the United States did not interfere with a coup to overthrow the regime that occured after the photo had been taken.

3. Every photo has some additional information, links, readings, or videos associated. Please tell me what you learned in addition to the actual photo. The additional information assiciated with this picture is a voice recording of the photographer and how the event in the picture played out. The man who is on fire was an old monk who sat in the middle of a circle of monks in the middle of the street. Two of the younger monks poured gasoline on the old monk, who then took out a matchbook and lit himself on fire. The photographer continued to descride the shock and horror of the people watching the event unfold, which is encaptured in the picture that he took.

Top 100 Photos- The Hand of Mrs. Wilhelm Röntgen

1. Why did you pick this image? What caught your eye? I picked it because the skeleton reminded me of Halloween, which is coming up. This image caught my eye because it was one of the only ones in color. I was also curious to find out more about the photo because there is something on her finger and I wanted to see if there was more information regarding that. I was also interested to see that it was  an x-ray, but the feeling of it seemed old.

2. Summarize what you read. How about 2-3 sentences explaining the photo. The hand in this photo, and in many of the other x-ray photos, were of Wilhelm's wife, Anna. Wilhelm had invented the first x-ray machine while experimenting with a cathode tube and electromagnetic frequencies. He got the first ever Nobel Prize in physics in 1901 due to his discovery of the x-ray.

Top 100 Photos- Cotton Mill Girl

1. Why did you pick this image? What caught your eye? I chose this photo because I saw that it was in one of the cotton mills. I remember studying some of the effects of cotton mills in middle school history. I was drawn to it because I knew some background to the picture. I was drawn to this picture because of the use of lines on the left side of the photo, which in turn led to the young girl.

2. Summarize what you read. How about 2-3 sentences explaining the photo. He was in favor of the child labor laws and used these photos to raise awareness of the conditions of the mills. He had to lie to get the untouched photos that he got, the owners of the mills would not have let him into the building unless he had lied about what he was doing. He took pictures in a lot of the states, documenting the conditions of all of them.

3. Every photo has some additional information, links, readings, or videos associated. Please tell me what you learned in addition to the actual photo. I learned that there was an actual committee that advocated for child labor laws, who hired him to take photos of the exploited children. It was explained that child labor had been a part of life that was necessary for some families to survive, which is why the child labor laws ended up being so controversial. The video also explained the above photo, that the girl was Sadie Pfeifer, and that the picture was taken in a cotton mill in Lancaster, South Carolina.

Top 100 Photos- Black Power Salute

1. Why did you pick this image? What caught your eye? I picked this image because I thought that it was interesting and because I thought I would like to read up more on the event. This caught my eye because I had seen this picture before and I have read some more behind the events that lead up to it.

2. Summarize what you read. How about 2-3 sentences explaining the photo. The American sprinters Tommie Smith, who got the got the gold medal, and John Carlos, who got the bronze medal, at the Olympics in 1968, which was held in Mexico City. They were protesting the treatment of African Americans in America, by not wearing shoes, by raising a gloved hand, wearing a scarf and other items of clothing with symbolic meanings.

3. Every photo has some additional information, links, readings, or videos associated. Please tell me what you learned in addition to the actual photo. The additional information that was associated with this photo was a guide on the different symbolisms of protest that are present in the photo (pictured below). Both the bronze and gold medalists have a black glove held in the air, symbolizing the unity of Black America. The gold medalist, Tommy Smith, does not have shoes on, which you can see in the photo. That is used to symbolize the poverty that African Americans are forced into.

Abandoned Theme Parks- Extra Credit

1. The amusement park that I would like to visit with a camera would be the Land of Oz, Beech Mountain, in North Carolina. I would like to visit this one because it is actually still in working order. I am not a good person to take to "scary" places because I get scared really easily, and since it opens for visits for two days in October, that means that the place isn't completely deserted. I think that the amusement park would be in enough of a disarray to have cool juxtaposing pictures, but not enough to terrify me.

2.

3. The abandoned Disney amusement park in Japan (Nara Dreamland), abandoned hospitals, abandoned malls, the remains of abandoned mining towns (if there even are any left), and isolated abandoned houses in a forest. I can't think of any place specifically besides the Disney amusement park in Japan, but these places would be cool to visit.

4.

5. I think that it would be really fun to go to another country and be able to document their version of an American Classic, or Disney. I think that I could get a lot of juxtaposing pictures, which is something that really interests me as an artist. I also think that the amount of greenery would be able to rival anywhere in America. I think that there would be more opportunity to document the clash of the abandoned man-made place and nature here.

6. I would need to get a passport, get overseas plane tickets, and arrange hotel reservations. The majority of the work and planning would be put into getting there. I would need to get a camera, with a variety of lens and maybe a tripod.  It is illegal to enter the grounds. There was the beginning of a demolition project in 2016, but from what I can tell, they never completed. There are actually multiple blogs giving instructions on how to get into the abandoned amusement park. I think that the majority of it has been destroyed by now.
