Top 100 Photos- Cotton Mill Girl

1. Why did you pick this image? What caught your eye? I chose this photo because I saw that it was in one of the cotton mills. I remember studying some of the effects of cotton mills in middle school history. I was drawn to it because I knew some background to the picture. I was drawn to this picture because of the use of lines on the left side of the photo, which in turn led to the young girl.

2. Summarize what you read. How about 2-3 sentences explaining the photo. He was in favor of the child labor laws and used these photos to raise awareness of the conditions of the mills. He had to lie to get the untouched photos that he got, the owners of the mills would not have let him into the building unless he had lied about what he was doing. He took pictures in a lot of the states, documenting the conditions of all of them.

3. Every photo has some additional information, links, readings, or videos associated. Please tell me what you learned in addition to the actual photo. I learned that there was an actual committee that advocated for child labor laws, who hired him to take photos of the exploited children. It was explained that child labor had been a part of life that was necessary for some families to survive, which is why the child labor laws ended up being so controversial. The video also explained the above photo, that the girl was Sadie Pfeifer, and that the picture was taken in a cotton mill in Lancaster, South Carolina.
